here, rubicon's quality assurance manager, and also a graduate of the program. we'll get to that in a moment. >> okay. >> andrew, you took over this company. i know the name, rubicon. >> yes. >> it's been around for a number of years. but you are a relatively new owner. >> i bought the bakery about three and a half years ago, in 2009. >> and i understand that before you decided to buy it, you were in charge -- you were contacted by the original owners to sell the company, sell the bakery. >> yes. they had asked me to take a look at the bakery and help them understand how the bakery was working and then they decided to sell it. the bakery was originally owned by a nonprofit called rubicon programs, which does great work in the bay area. they decided to sell the bakery and they came to me for help in selling the bakery. >> so what was it that you decided -- that you saw that you decided to get into the business for yourself? >> i looked at the bakery and tried to help them find a buyer. but what i found was because

the bakery was owned by a nonprofit, it was in an older building, it had older equipment, their resources were stretched, and i didn't find that buyers were particularly interested in the bakery. but as i spent time at the bakery and watched what they did, i fell in love with their mission. >> and your background was -- were you a restauranteur? >> i was a restauranteur and years ago i studied finance as well. >> with your background, you decided this was a good investment? >> i thought i could turn this bakery around. i'm not so sure i thought it was a great investment, but as i said, i fell in love with what they were doing. >> as a bakery, they were baking goods and selling them, but the real mission was to reach out to the community to do this social program that they have in place. >> yes. >> and you have kept it going? >> yes, i have kept it going. one of rubicon program's primary missions in selling the bakery was they only wanted to sell the bakery to someone who would maintain the same social mission upon which the bakery

was founded. >> and that was? >> to help people restart their lives, to give people a second chance to start their lives over. >> and so when you bought the company back in about 2009, how many employees did you have? >> we had 14 part-time employees, and we've grown over the last three years. we now have about 80 full-time employees. >> wow. and it's doing well? >> it's doing great. >> and sheila is one of the people that came on to rubicon. >> yes. >> sheila, you've been there three or four years? >> four years, yes. >> and you're a shining example, if you will, of someone who came to rubicon in need of some support and help. >> exactly. >> very quickly, what was the issue with you? >> the issue with me was, i come from a tabled past. i didn't make the right choices in my life and i got into a lot of trouble. i decided to clean my life up and do something better for myself. and i went to rubicon for a

job. they put me in a training program and from the training program, i worked on the floor. i started off just putting stickers on packaging. >> okay. >> i worked my way from there into managing the packaging department. >> you are manager of quality assurance, which is really important, because obviously, andrew doesn't want anything going out that isn't good. >> it is very important. and it was very clear to me, even before i bought the company, when i was just looking at the bakery, i could see that sheila had that sparkle in her eye. >> so when i introduced this segment, i said that regardless of criminal background. >> yes. >> and that's what you do-- >> we don't ask questions about people's past. if people come to us and they are ready to work, then we're ready to hire them. >> and so you train them from scratch? >> from scratch. we don't expect people to have any particular skill. we want them to know how to work hard. >> what's the success rate,

then? >> well, we have a very good success rate. i would say that probably in excess of 90% of the people who come to us stay with us for quite a while. >> and do they go on to other companies and continue with their skills? >> sometimes they do. sometimes the bakery is not the right fit for them. sometimes people are really not quite ready to work. that's the chance we take. >> sheila, in your case, you became very successful in just a few years? >> yes. >> one, i know you're very proud of yourself. >> yes, i am. >> but how difficult was it to put your past behind you and say i'm going to really take this seriously? >> actually, it wasn't very difficult at all, because at rubicon bakery, we're all a really tight-knit family and all the resources that you need for anything that you need are there for you. >> is that counseling, job training? i mean, you have a staff to help out? >> we provide job training. we don't provide counseling. we still have a relationship

with rubicon programs. and if someone needs counseling, i call rubicon programs and i ask them-- >> you still work with the nonprofit? >> yes. >> couple examples. you made this this morning? not necessarily your baked, but freshly baked. >> yes. >> this is a cinnamon bread. >> yes, it is. >> and-- >> a carrot cake. >> i know the crew is waiting for this over here. [ laughter ] you have a successful company. you sell wholesale. >> correct. >> to well-known stores that we have in the bay area. >> whole foods is one of them. we sell to some smaller, independent stores. >> do they support you because not only is the product good, but also because of your mission? >> i would say they support us primarily because our product is great. >> okay. >> that's the most important thing, but they love the fact that we're helping people in their lives. and that makes us a better partner for them. >> so a successful business, with a great social mission, and you're making a difference.

grandmothers from 13 countries share their stories and the woman who has met all of these women is photo journalist paolo jon turco. you have probably broken the record, because you have been here since 2000 or 2001, because you keep writing these wonderful, inspirational books about women around the world. >> thank you. this is book number five. glad to be back. >> glad to have you! so i know you travel the world. you go to so many countries. and in this particular case, you chronicled grandmothers trying to make a difference. how is the story unfolding? >> grandmothers all over the world, it's a whole activist grandmother movement. they just look at our troubled world and say, not good enough for my grandchild. so they begin working together in groups to change things, to make the future better. >> part of the information that -- partly, it's the baby boom generation, not just in the united states. a lot of these women were maybe activists when they were younger and they have continued

that kind of strong stance throughout their lives. and now passing that on to their grandchildren s that correct? >> you bet. they know they can change the world, because they did. >> ah, okay. because the pictures are great, because the stories are wonderful, let's go to some of the stories that you have right away, okay? the first one is in what country? >> these are grandmothers who are raising grandchildren, who have been orphaned by aids. they are partners of the stephen lewis foundation. they are 15 country's worth of grandmothers who receive grants. money is raised by the canadian grandmothers. there are 8000 canadian grandmothers standing in solidarity, helping these grandmothers. >> and this lady has a great story. >> she planted a community garden. they requested just enough from the stephen lewis foundation to buy seeds so they could plant a community garden in swaysyland. >> and we are talking about the devastation of aids in the country. >> huge, all over the

continent. i left africa that year thinking the future of this continent rests in the hands of the grandmothers. >> right, and we are going to travel to where? >> here we are in the san francisco bay area, bay area raging granny's action league. they mount protests, funny protests, wearing silly hats and aprons, looking like old- fashioned grandmothers. >> they do that on purpose, then? >> to get media attention for the issues they believe will be either good for or bad for their grandchildren. >> okay. here we see a character couture of governor schwarzenegger. >> and here we are in india. world ill literate grandmothers went back to school to learn how to be solar engineers. light source to their dark villages. 20,000 households all over india now have light because of

them. this woman is from africa. the u.n. drift of the indian women success began sending mothers from all over the developing world to study with the indian grandmothers. >> wow! >> there are now 35,000 morehouses, all over 50 countries in the developing world who now -- that now have electricity, thanks to the grandmothers. >> and so the grandmothers are trying to improve life for their immediate community, villages, and suburban cities? >> exactly. everything changes. their grandchildren no longer get black lung disease from studying by kerosene lamps. the mid wives can deliver babies in the middle of the night. they can charge their cell phones and do electronic bankings. everything changed once they have electricity. refrigerators. they could preserve food, which they could never do before. >> these are the grandmothers taking charge. is it because their own children are working or just absent, not present to help the grandchildren? >> in fact, it turned out that the grandmothers in the villages in india were the ones

who stay in the villages. the barefoot college began training young men who went straight to the city to make money for their families. >> okay. >> the grandmothers stay in the villages. and so when they began learning how to be solar engineers, it was they who changed things. >> because if you want to get ahead and get a good life and a profession, you have to go to the city, which means that the rural area is still in the dark. >> exactly. >> almost literally. >> in the dark. >> what about the men? are they supportive of the women? >> well, there are many places all over africa now where the men are no longer there. they -- aids has been so pervasive. but in many places, yes, they are supportive. >> and so the women have been empowered to take care of themselves and learn. so they are going back to school. >> they are going back to school. >> getting degrees. and are they opening up businesses, or how are they taking advantage of their education and their support?

>> well, they are doing completely different things in different countries. for example, in argentina, there are 2000 grandmothers who are conducting a literacy program in the school system. the story-telling grandmothers are so effective. it turns out, good literature and love of children propels children's love of books and reading. that program has now been incorporated into the national school curriculum and copied by eight other countries. >> i guess because the grandmothers experienced life prior to this life, i mean, with the children, they know what it was like when they were poor and uneducated and had -- and were in the dark. so they went to change that for the future. >> exactly, exactly. >> so how many countries are here, 15? >> 15 in this book. >> and i think like 120 women you interviewed? >> that's right, exactly. >> and it takes you many, many years to put something like this together. it's complicated. >> i've been traveling for three years before i began writing. >> so you have been doing this

for the past decade. >> that's true. >> you have seen changes. what does that tell you about what's going on around the world with women? >> it's very interesting, because i saw immediately, when i began doing this work, the effect of the u.n.'s conference on women in 1995. and in fact, women's roles have become increasingly powerful over this period. >> so you've seen change? >> we're not there yet, but there has been a lot of change everywhere. >> and they know about the other women in other countries and that they are also trying to make changes, too. >> the grandmothers are working across borders and across oceans. canadian grandmothers, for example, are working with grandmothers in 15 countries all over africa. >> so reaching out across the seas? >> exactly. >> so what we want to do is let everybody know that not only is grandmother power a beautiful coffee table book that tells stories of very strong women around the world, it also is a way that you can help support a

. earth day was created 23 years ago to create awareness of the earth's delicate environment. and so each year since,

volunteers have gone out to clean beaches and to help in the public parks and doing more. my next guest will share some of the many items we can do to support california state parks. jared emery is the director of communications for california state parks foundation. we've been talking about this for a while, for a number of years and it seems to me earth day gets bigger and bigger and bigger in terms of awareness and volunteers willing to do their part. >> i think you're absolutely right. and thank you for having me back on the show once again. this is our 56th annual earth day in state parks that we help organize with state park employees. and i think that's probably a result of the fact that state parks have been hit pretty hard in terms of their budget and some other challenges they have been having over the years. every year i come on in the back we're dealing with issues. but earth day is a day of celebration and of volunteerism. and you're right, this is the biggest one we've put on.

we have 24 state parks around the state that are participating. there's 280 state parks around the state, but obviously, it would be a logistical nightmare to have an event in each one. and we have about 11 in the greater bay area. but this has become such a popular event that most of those are already filled. >> that's unbelievable! we're talking thousands of people! >> yes, we have a ceiling on each state park because they can only take in so many people and organize them for the events. we do have four really interesting state parks that are in the greater bay area that still need some volunteers. >> name them. >> well, jack london state park, just north of here. it's a state historic park, beautiful place. they will be doing some renovation, maybe a little painting, trail work. >> and here's an example. this is a pretty picture. >> very beautiful picture. >> and then we have sonoma coast state park, which is actually a series of pocket

beaches. >> we're talking about debris removal. we're talking about heavy duty stuff. >> it is heavy duty stuff. people wear the proper equipment, issued the equipment or asked to bring it. and i mean gloves and protective stuff, because the ocean, you know, it regurgitates a lot of stuff onto the beach. they put that all together. and there will be graffiti removal and general cleanup around the visitors center and toward the top of the mountain. they need help with removal of weeds and other, just basic weeding and removal of those weeds off site. >> a lot of this cleanup, is it also reseeding? >> lot of planting of native plants and removing nonnative plants. a few places, they are going to be planting out native plants.

and so we're very excited about it and if people want to find out how to sign up, they need to go to our website. i know you show that later, but it's calparks.org and they will see a big button there right on the home page and they click that and it goes to a page where they can choose a park they are interested in and it will say whether or not there's openings. very simple registration online. >> the thing is, let's clarify. earth day is actually on the 22nd of april. >> correct. >> you have an event that is april 13th. >> that's right. >> that's the actual cleanup day. >> we always try to organize ours the week or two before earth day on a saturday, because for obvious reasons, it's easier for people to come out. and so, yes, this is earlier, plus there's other huge events going on, on the actual earth day this year. i believe it's on a monday. and so it's a weekend thing and it's basically from 8:00 or 9:00 to noon, 12:30, depending upon the site. they get a little bit of instruction. they work really hard. they get really dirty. we feed them lunch and they go

home happy. >> really a good solid half day work. >> it really is. >> not a whole-day thing. you still have time to do other things. >> and not only do people leave satisfied and happy, but they are doing a great thing for their state parks. >> let's tell people how to register. earth day is april 22nd. the california state parks will need your help on april 13th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. now, you need to register by april 8th so that you can make sure that all the parks -- they can make sure all the parks are appropriately staffed. as jerry said, go ahead and register. choose your park. call 1-888-98-parks. or visit them at calparks.org/earthday for information. but we have run out of time today. don't forget to visit us on the bay area people page at ktvu.com.
